The evening begins with three selections played by the Eureka High School Symphonic Band, under the direction of Chris Carter: “Gavorkna Fanfare” by Jack Stamp, “The Raven” by Barry Koptetz, and “Mannin Veen ‘Dear Isle of Man’” by Haydn Wood.

Then the HSU Symphonic Band begins with “Valdres” by Johannes Hanssen (“A Norwegian march—maybe the only one,” Cummings quipped. “Anyway, it’s the best one.”) After the William Byrd Suite, “Council Bluffs” and Symphonia #5, the two symphonic bands will combine for two selections. Paul Cummings will conduct “Chorale and Alleluia” by Howard Hanson, and Chris Cox will conduct “Tico Tico,” a South American tune by Paz Abreu arranged by a Japanese composer. “So it’s kind of a Japanese samba,” Cummings suggested.

This is the meeting of the “Jacks” and the “Loggers,” which will result in 115 “axes” (as musicians sometimes call their instruments) on the Fulkerson stage. “If we can figure out how to fit them all up there,” Cummings added. The answer to that question, as well as these selections from 400 years of music, will be answered on December 1 at 8 PM.
